The Impact We Make
America is built on biblical values
The idea that many of the founding principles of the Americas were influenced by the Judeo-Christian moral and ethical teachings found in the Bible. This perspective argues that the cultural, legal, and political foundations of the nation are rooted in ideas that can be traced back to Christian or biblical teachings. Here are some ways to expand on this idea:
Christian ethics have profoundly influenced American values, particularly the emphasis on individual rights, the dignity of the person, and personal responsibility. Biblical principles such as the Ten Commandments have shaped foundational laws against murder, theft, and dishonesty. Furthermore, Christian teachings about loving one’s neighbor and showing mercy to the marginalized resonate with American ideals of equality and fairness. These values also found expression in the beliefs of the Founding Fathers, who, while diverse in their personal faiths, recognized the importance of religious morality in cultivating virtue and ensuring a just society. Leaders like George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson supported the separation of church and state but understood the moral foundation religion provided.
The early American political and social systems also reflect biblical influence. The Declaration of Independence’s assertion of inalienable rights—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—draws from the Christian belief in a Creator who grants these rights. Government ideals such as being “for the people” and “by the people” echo the moral accountability emphasized in Christian teachings. Religious freedom, a cornerstone of the nation’s identity, was sought by settlers fleeing persecution and is rooted in the belief that freedom is a God-given right. Symbols such as the national motto "In God We Trust" and the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance underscore the moral framework inspired by biblical values. However, sustaining these principles is essential; without deliberate effort to uphold them, the moral foundation of society risks erosion.
